The ball must crosscourt and follow the two-bounce rule, meaning that the first two shots—the serve and the return—must bounce. After the initial shots, players can hit the ball off the bounce or out of the air. This is called a volley. The rally continues until a fault occurs, such as a double bounce, the ball going out of bounds or hitting the net. One unique feature of pickleball is the non-volley zone, referred to as “the kitchen.” The kitchen extends 7 feet from either side of the net. Players cannot hit the ball out of the air in this zone, adding a strategic element that keeps the game interesting.
