Life Lessons from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

As I approach my thirteenth year of training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Club Greenwood, I want to reflect on what Jiu-Jitsu has added to my life. I love the classes, the instructor, Professor Matt Cram and the camaraderie with my fellow attendees. I have found that Jiu-Jitsu offers amazing strength training of all muscles in my body. It pushes my cardio to limits that no run ever has, increased my flexibility to a gumby-like state and trained my coordination far beyond where it was when I started.

Jiu-Jitsu gave me an incredible skill to protect myself and those around me. Jiu-Jitsu has been incredible for building my body. It has taught me to be resilient, confident and seek gratification from myself and not the external world. Jiu-Jitsu taught me to be humble and thankful.

Each of the benefits I have seen from Jiu-Jitsu are amazing in their own right but even more incredible is the balance they have created in who I am. Strength balanced with technique, speed balanced with timing, skill and confidence balanced with humility, progress balanced with thankfulness. I am truly a better person with Jiu-Jitsu in my life.
