Why Pickleball is a Great Workout

Pickleball is Great for All Ages — especially Young Professionals

Pickleball has been rising in popularity as it is not only fun, but a great way to stay in shape. At Club Greenwood, we offer an array of fitness classes and activities, and of course, pickleball. Read on to learn more about the sport, and its health benefits.

What Is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a combination of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton. Pickleball is played with a wiffle ball rather than a tennis ball, and takes place on a court about half the size of a traditional tennis court. The sport can be played both inside and outside and does not require as much running as tennis, but is still a great work-out. It’s also been said to be more “beginner friendly” due to the size of the court and rules of the game. At Club Greenwood, we offer a variety of classes, drop-in sessions, leagues, and social events surrounding the sport!

Why Pickleball Is Great for Mental Health

The stresses of life, work, etc. have had a major impact on the mental health of many, especially young professionals. Many have found it difficult to manage these stresses and find a proper work-life balance. Pickleball has been a solution for many as it is an extremely social sport with a friendly community. This can be especially helpful to those who are struggling to find the time in their busy lives to fulfill their social needs. Whether you play singles or doubles, you will be interacting with friends in this sport, all while getting in a great workout. Win-win!

As many know, exercise has been proven to improve mental health. Exercise reduces anxiety, depression, and uplifts our moods and thoughts by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. On top of that, social connections lower rates of anxiety and depression, raise self-esteem, and create more trusting and cooperative relationships.

Pickleball—yet again—provides both! In fact, the National Institutes of Health conducted a study in 2021, where they found evidence of improved cognitive performance, moods, self-esteem, and more in people who had played pickleball for just six weeks.

Pickleball Improves Physical Health

As we all know, exercise is mandatory for proper physical health. One way the sport aids in overall health is by improving the immune system. There are many factors that can lead to a weakened immune system, such as stress, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, a poor diet, etc. Implementing this fun form of exercise into your schedule will help you lead the healthy lifestyle you want!

An Approachable Form of Exercise.

Around 80% of Americans do not get the recommended amount of exercise per week. Partaking in sports like pickleball can help change that. With a busy schedule, it can be daunting to try to find your new form of exercise, but after many have tried it, they find the time to hit the courts. It is much easier to stick with something good for you when it brings you joy during and after. Beyond that, when you get involved, you have someone to hold you accountable. Knowing that you have an opponent or teammate counting on you to play the game provides the additional push that some people may need to get to the court.

Overall, pickleball is becoming one of the most favored forms of exercise for people of all ages! More and more young professionals are flocking to the courts as they can alleviate the stress of the working world by exercising and forming friendships through game, all at the same time.
