Feel Good Reminders

By Shelby A. Thomas, L.S.W.

This week’s tip will give you something to chew on in the coming weeks. Yep, pun intended, we are talking about nutrition! But before we even get to discussing food, this is your reminder to stay hydrated and drink lots of water! Not only will adequate hydration keep you cool as the temperature rises, but it will work wonders for your immune system. Water flushes out toxins and oxygenates your body’s cells, helping them to function optimally which, in a nutshell, keeps you healthy.

To calculate how much water you need each day, take your weight in pounds and divide that number by two; that’s the amount of ounces you should aim for! Boost your motivation and track your water intake by inviting friends or family to participate in a hydration challenge.lettuce, kiwi, apples, banana and water laying on a green table

Now, when it comes to what you are eating, I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know: Eat lots of nutrient-rich vegetables and fruits to ensure that your body is getting all the necessary vitamins, be mindful of eating too many processed foods, and avoid excessive amounts of sugar. You know all this! The reminder I want to emphasize, though, is to notice your eating patterns overall.

It is so easy to eat beyond when we feel full out of boredom during quarantine or forget to eat at all. Pay attention to how you feel, make sure that you are fueling your body, and have a little fun by trying out a new recipe. The best part about drinking water and eating healthy, tasty food is that it boosts your mental health as well. Your mind is much less likely to feel foggy or anxious and the social nature of sharing a meal gives you that natural dose of feel-good dopamine.
